What Dress Should I Wear to the Yule Ball
The Yule Ball is a very critical part of every young adult series, the portion of the story where the characters are able to shed their daily garb and dress up in fancy outfits as they all come together for celebration (and drama)
Harry Potter's Yule Ball offers the chance for exactly this and it does it spectacularly. Here are the outfits of the main characters, ranked.
10 Ron Weasley
There are no two ways about it. Ron's Yule Ball outfit is just the worst. These robes don't belong anywhere, let alone at a dance. A garish blend of maroon, paisley, checkers, and lace, these are robes a wizard wouldn't wish on his sworn enemy.
It's not a surprise that Ron's date isn't impressed. But ultimately, it's Ron's sour expression which makes his look as bad as it is. There's just no making up for a bad attitude.
9 Ginny Weasley
Unfortunately for the Weasleys, Ginny's outfit isn't much better than Ron's. While it makes sense that she isn't at the height of fashion, having not yet undergone her glow up, fans still cringe a little bit for this choice. Green and pink might be a sweet combination in theory, but Ginny is a year younger than the trio, not four. The overly cartoonish star buttons on the gown and the way it resembles a fairy from a child's cartoon do Ginny no favors. Older Ginny probably looks back at this choice and shakes her head.
What is there to say about Harry's outfit? Much like with the rest of the things that concern Harry, it's just pretty average. While not terrible, it's nothing that special either, basically, it's a tux in robe form. It does fit Harry Pretty well, and the white bow tie is a nice touch, it at a ball for wizards, it's just a fine choice.
8 Cedric Diggory
Like Harry, Cedric is wearing basically a wizard tux, but he wears it with much more confidence than Harry does, making all the difference.
Cedric's version of dress robes has black buttons and a black bow tie adding a nice contrast to the overall look. It doesn't help that he's a little taller and a little more charming too...
7 Draco Malfoy
Like Harry and Cedric, Draco is dressed in robe tuxedo. However, Draco at least has given some attempt to make a fashion statement. His bow tie, white, earning him style points, is a statement price, overly ostentatious like Draco himself, and the buttons on his tuxedo sparkle in the light.
It also appears that Draco is wearing a cumberbund. Overall Draco doesn't do that much more than the other guys, but he gets a higher ranking for at least putting a little thought into it.
6 Madame Maxime
Of course, the headmistress of Beauxbatons would have something stylish to wear to the ball. Madame Maxime dazzles in her white patterned number, with a sparkling underdress to match.
It's no wonder Hagrid is absolutely stunned.
5 Fleur Delacour
Fleur looks radiant in her gown which makes sense because Fleur is always stylish and also French.
Fleur's pale, pale icy colored gown hangs off her in exactly the right way, elegantly drifting down her body in gathers that are sure to flow open prettily as she spins. At the top of the gown is a delicate metallic decoration that resembles leaves. Her hair is gathered and done with floating hair decorations. Altogether, lovely.
4 Cho Chang
Cho also looks marvelous at the dance. Her light green, silken gown hugs her form exactly the right way, cutting a lovely shape. The floral pattern on the dress adds a sweetness to it, green and pink done right.
Her long draping sleeves form a great contrast to the high slight of her gown, and the dress itself is very structurally interesting from head to toe. It's no wonder Harry can't keep his eyes off her as they all dance.
3 Victor Krum
Victor Krum is the only man to really deliver at the Yule Ball. Hermione's date really brings his A-game to the party as he appears in a coat of deep red, slashed with a leather belt, with a fur over his shoulder. Krum's boots complete the look.
While all the Hogwarts men went for neutral black or white, this pop of color adds much-needed life to the outfits at the dance.
2 Parvati (& Padma) Patil
While Parvati's actual movie gown leaves much to be desired, she ranks high because fans know what might have been. Parvati is meant to come to the Yule Ball in a gorgeous deep pink dress meant to resemble a sari, traditional Indian ceremonial wear.
Sari's are among the most beautiful outfits in the world and their colors always stun. Parvati and her twin surely showed up to the ball in something stunning.
1 Hermione Granger
Whether going by the book or film, Hermione made a splash at the Yule ball. Stepping outside herself for a moment, Hermione donned gorgeous dress robes of pink (or periwinkle) and made a great entrance on the arm of Victor Krum.
A truly magical transformation for a magical evening.
